Hoe ki angitū round one – Jacobs New Zealand Ltd

|

Jacobs New Zealand Ltd was funded $299,800 to develop a Concept of Operations for a trial mobility hub in response to the first-round challenge of Hoe ki angitū, the NZTA Innovation Fund: Integrating low-emission first and last-mile solutions.

A mobility hub provides access to a range of sustainable transport options and services like shared ebikes and public transport. Mobility hubs empower and facilitate local communities to take up active and sustainable transport and are most effective when there is an integrated network of hubs. The Concept of Operations is intended to provide proof-of-concept and guidance for how to set up a hub.

Jacobs developed a concept business model for a mobility hub in Aranui, Christchurch using a user-focussed approach. The development started with the desired services and layout for the hub before addressing operations and management, procurement, indicative costs, and funding opportunities.

The project findings highlighted the importance and complexity of community engagement. The engagement revealed support for the project, but unexpected community preferences such as including space and services for both electric and non-electric bikes, and tricycles to provide more accessible mobility solutions. The mobility hub business model sets out the Concept of Operations, provides decision-making support for a trial hub in Aranui and for other mobility hubs across New Zealand, and estimated costings.

The implementation of the trial will follow once funding is obtained.
