Otanerua Eco-Viaduct - an aspect of urban design.

Otanerua Eco-Viaduct

The Otanerua Eco-Viaduct provides an ecological corridor under the motorway that enables wildlife to travel unimpeded through the bush and ensures the sustainability of local fauna in an area of significant native vegetation.

The design of the eco viaduct allows for as much preservation of the ecological function of the forest as possible. The design of the bridge is such that in some sections it will enable the forest canopy trees to reach full height.

The aesthetics design of the viaduct has focused on providing a simple design in order to let the surrounding environment be the dominant aesthetic feature.

The ALPURT project allows State Highway 1 traffic to bypass Orewa, easing traffic flow through the town and supporting the growth of a key centre for the Auckland region. The project also supports the Orewa community's efforts to re-establish the strong connection between town and beach, a focal point of the town's identity long threatened by traffic congestion.
