Cycle routes will inevitably need to cross the road at some point between intersections (ie in the mid-block area).  This may require interaction with motorised traffic and/or pedestrians. 

Crossings create a higher risk situation for cyclists than when travelling along a mid-block facility. Choosing and designing an appropriate crossing to accommodate people cycling requires careful consideration of a number of factors such as the type of facility between intersections and the target users of the facility.
