Ōtaki River Bridge to Taylors Road shared path

Work on the new shared path through Ōtaki is nearing completion. The final section will be the installation of the two clip-ons – one for one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge.

This work is part of and funded through the Peka Peka to Ōtaki (PP2Ō) Expressway project.

About the project

The Ōtaki shared pathway is part of and funded through the Peka Peka to Ōtaki (PP2Ō) Expressway project.

Once complete, the shared path through Ōtaki will link the township with the rest of Kāpiti via existing shared pathways, and will help improve safety of walking and cycling, and encourage recreation and tourism in Ōtaki.

By building a shared path well-separated from other road users, we’re creating safer and more enjoyable journeys – not just for cyclists and pedestrians – but for motorists too.

The final part of the shared path project will be the installation of the bridge clip-ons – one for one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge.

Benefits

Separating walking and cycling paths from the road is the best and safest option as it removes any chance of pedestrians and cyclists being at risk from live traffic lanes.

This also better connects Ōtaki with the rest of Kāpiti via its connection to the existing shared path network beside the expressway, and creates safer and more enjoyable journeys – not just for cyclists and pedestrians – but for motorists too.

What’s next?

At this stage we won’t be starting on the clip-on portions of the Ōtaki shared path project in May as we’re still working behind the scenes to investigate a less disruptive installation method, which includes applying for additional resource consents.

We’ll inform and share updates with local stakeholders, residents, businesses and road users before any work starts.

In the meantime, Downer continues to work on the remaining parts of the shared path project through Ōtaki – this includes assembling the clip-on sections and transporting them to Ōtaki ready for installation.
