Two and a half million native trees and plants are being planted on Transmission Gully... |
00:07:21 |
The planting is over 60 percent complete.
There are around nine hundred thousand left to plant. |
00:12:14 |
North of Pouāwha/Wainui Saddle |
00:00:15 |
So today we’ve got some of our planting team up on top of the cuts. |
00:00:19 |
Ben Hine, Contracts Manager, Evergreen |
We’re doing some specific type buffer planting |
00:00:24 |
Everyone’s got a job to do on Transmission Gully – even the plants. |
00:00:28 |
There’s some Manuka, a couple of different types of Coprosma, there’s Lancewoods. |
00:00:35 |
There’s some Toi Toi, there’s some Ribbonwood up there. |
00:00:38 |
Some good hardy native New Zealand shrubs, |
00:00:40 |
that will aid soil stabilisation where its been disturbed |
00:00:43 |
and bring back the native vegetation with good diversity. |
00:00:48 |
The plants are chosen by ecologists, but how do they help with stabilisation? |
00:00:54 |
So, it is to do with the roots, subsurface, holding the ground together. |
00:00:58 |
Also, with the vegetation as it grows and builds up, |
00:01:02 |
it really slows the velocity of the water. |
00:01:05 |
The mix of slowing the velocity of the water down and the roots holding the surface |
00:01:08 |
together, basically stabilises the soil. |
00:01:12 |
Who knew plants would make it safer to drive on Transmission Gully? |
00:01:16 |
Safety is critical for the planting team too, it’s a challenging job. |
00:01:21 |
The guys have had to put some additional safety methods in place |
00:01:25 |
due to the gradient at the top of the cut. |
00:01:28 |
So we’ve had to hang off ropes and do it, |
00:01:30 |
under supervision of Level 3 IRATA rope supervisors. |
00:01:35 |
This project in particular, the terrain we’re working in is quite intense. |
00:01:39 |
We don’t always have to work on ropes, |
00:01:42 |
but there is some pretty challenging terrain in Wellington itself |
00:01:46 |
and in particular on the Transmission Gully project. |
00:01:49 |
So, it's certainly tested our guys out. |
00:01:53 |
It’s probably made them stronger, physically and mentally. |
00:01:57 |
While some vegetation has had to be cleared to build the road, |
00:02:00 |
the impact of this is offset by the planting of indigenous trees. |
00:02:04 |
So, that in a few years the canopy coverage will actually be more than was lost. |
00:02:10 |
Having a look at what might be missing in the environment now, |
00:02:15 |
how can we get the diversity back? |
00:02:17 |
What’s going to be the right species in the right environments? |
00:02:21 |
There’s a multitude of environments. |
00:02:23 |
Riparian planting provides shade for stream habitats. |
There’s the riparian planting along the streams. |
00:02:25 |
There’s the crestal cut planting. There’s reinstating pasture back to native vegetation. |
00:02:33 |
There’s several hundred thousand Kanuka going in across the project. |
00:02:36 |
Around 534 hectares of land surrounding the new motorway is already coming to life, |
00:02:42 |
with a variety of new seedlings, including long-living giants like tōtara, mataī and rimu. |
00:02:49 |
It’s expected that the increased habitat will entice wildlife. |
00:02:53 |
But not all wildlife is welcome. |
00:02:56 |
We have had quite a bit of pest damage across the site with goats, deer, |
00:03:00 |
possums, hare, that are being controlled. |
00:03:04 |
And there has been a significant amount of control over the last couple of years. |
00:03:10 |
The pests have really slowed down the plant growth |
00:03:13 |
in some areas, however we are on top of it and we are seeing some really good results. |
00:03:18 |
Helicopters are used to carry plants to remote locations. |
00:03:22 |
A chopper can deliver 10 thousand plants an hour to the hills. |
00:03:26 |
It’s currently the biggest planting job in the country. |
00:03:30 |
Absolutely rewarding. It's such a monumental project |
00:03:35 |
to be involved in that is fantastic. |
00:03:38 |
To give local people employment opportunities and really build their skills is great. |
00:03:45 |
We’ve got a really good solid local team. |
00:03:48 |
A team that works in all weather. |
00:03:51 |
Look they really enjoy it. |
00:03:53 |
It’s doing an amazing thing for the environment. |
00:03:56 |
We’re re-establishing the vegetation. |
00:04:00 |
We’re assisting with erosion sediment control. |
00:04:02 |
Getting the diversity back into the natural environment. |
00:04:07 |
Overall, it’s a really important thing that we’re doing. |
