At Transmission Gully, the earthworks are virtually done |
00:00:07 |
the table is set and now it’s up to the paving teams |
00:00:10 |
to serve up the goods. |
00:00:13 |
Pretty much what the public see on the road, the black stuff that you see. |
00:00:16 |
the icing on the cake – that’s where I come in. |
00:00:19 |
Meet Jessa Tanner, engineer and head pavement ‘chef’. |
00:00:22 |
Her crew starts at 6am and it’s non stop. |
00:00:27 |
So the crew is about 9 to 11 people. |
00:00:29 |
Each of their roles is a moving part and critical |
00:00:31 |
There's a guy that gets the truck to come in and make sure |
00:00:34 |
he tips in to the paver softly and correctly. |
00:00:37 |
And then the paver driver will push the truck through |
00:00:40 |
And then there's guys at the back |
00:00:42 |
They're busy chasing the level of the asphalt |
00:00:44 |
just to make sure that it's getting laid correctly. |
00:00:47 |
Jessa says – think of paving like a layer cake. |
00:00:50 |
This right here is the chip seal which is a water proof membrane. |
00:00:54 |
This is your first layer of the AC14 |
00:00:58 |
this is an 85mm layer of the AC20 |
00:01:00 |
And this is the final 60mm before we put |
00:01:03 |
the 40mm SMA at the end of it, just like the icing on a cake |
00:01:08 |
Each layer is made to a unique recipe |
00:01:11 |
and delivered piping hot from the commercial kitchen down the road. |
00:01:15 |
A temporary asphalt plant at Mackays Crossing. |
00:01:19 |
We’ve got a plant in behind us here. |
00:01:21 |
You mix all the ingredients in the right order and quantities |
00:01:24 |
and it feeds the paving machine |
00:01:27 |
Our recipe? A dose of sand, aggregates, bitumen and one very special ingredient. |
00:01:33 |
We’re also using recycled asphalt |
00:01:35 |
that’s come out of the Wellington airport, |
00:01:38 |
which is a great opportunity realised so it saves that going to landfill. |
00:01:44 |
Asphalt that was once a runway, finding new purpose as a motorway. |
00:01:49 |
We get to recycle some of the bitumen out of that, |
00:01:52 |
also the aggregates, that otherwise would have gone to waste. |
00:01:55 |
The recycled runway accounts for about 15 per cent of the mix. |
00:01:59 |
so we’re not having to take resource out of rivers and quarries, |
00:02:03 |
and crush it, transport it that we would have if we didn’t have it in the mix |
00:02:08 |
The plant is cooking up structural asphalt otherwise known as ‘deep lift’ |
00:02:12 |
It’s a strong durable pavement |
00:02:15 |
that we’re using on the busy interchanges and the steepest parts of the motorway, |
00:02:19 |
like here near Pouāwha – the Wainui Saddle. |
00:02:22 |
So the asphalt is made by introducing the aggregates |
00:02:26 |
all in to a big drum which heats it all up. |
00:02:29 |
So the temperature it comes out of the drum here |
00:02:32 |
and into the trucks at around 170, 180 degrees, laid at about 165 degrees |
00:02:39 |
Each truck carries 13 tonnes of asphalt up to where it’s needed. |
00:02:43 |
The shear mass keeping it from losing much heat |
00:02:46 |
but the team has to move fast |
00:02:49 |
It's very critical, it comes out quite hot so it’s workable, to the way you need it to go. |
00:02:54 |
It's all about a smooth ride. |
00:02:56 |
it’s one of those things you need to come in and have the mindset |
00:02:59 |
and get it right the first time. |
00:03:00 |
And every person you see on the ground |
00:03:03 |
and every person on the team is working |
00:03:05 |
and giving it 120 per cent to get it there. |
