As part of the Dolomite Point Redevelopment Project at Punakaiki on the South Island's West Coast, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will construct approximately 4km of new shared cyclist and pedestrian pathway, either side of Dolomite Point, linking key attractions.
The proposed shared path supports the Dolomite Point Redevelopment project, which will replace the existing Department of Conservation visitor centre.
The redevelopment aims to create an authentic and compelling visitor experience at Dolomite Point, as the key gateway to the Pancake Rocks and the Paparoa National Park, as well as providing opportunities for economic growth of the West Coast region.
A multi-disciplinary team, working for the Department of Conservation and partners, will lead the Dolomite Point redevelopment design, including the section of shared path through the Dolomite Point redevelopment.
Waka Kotahi is responsible for the design and construction of the shared path on either side of Dolomite Point as it will run adjacent to SH6, Punakaiki, connecting local amenities.
The proposed shared path comprises dedicated pedestrian and cycle facilities the length of Punakaiki.
Benefits include:
The proposed shared path is designed with the community and visitors in mind - so people can move in a safe, enjoyable and vehicle-free manner between Punakaiki localities.
The proposed shared path has been designed in reference to the Cycle Trail Design Guide. It will be 1.8 metres - 2 metres wide and separated from the road.
Some points to note:
The design is largely complete and our proposals are out for public feedback. Construction of the shared path will commence in June or July 2021, once we have considered feedback from the community.
