Project overview

The proposed shared path supports the Dolomite Point Redevelopment project, which will replace the existing Department of Conservation visitor centre.

The redevelopment aims to create an authentic and compelling visitor experience at Dolomite Point, as the key gateway to the Pancake Rocks and the Paparoa National Park, as well as providing opportunities for economic growth of the West Coast region.

A multi-disciplinary team, working for the Department of Conservation and partners, will lead the Dolomite Point redevelopment design, including the section of shared path through the Dolomite Point redevelopment.

Waka Kotahi is responsible for the design and construction of the shared path on either side of Dolomite Point as it will run adjacent to SH6, Punakaiki, connecting local amenities.

Key features

The proposed shared path comprises dedicated pedestrian and cycle facilities the length of Punakaiki.

Benefits include:

  • Improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Linking key business and Punakaiki localities
  • Improved access for recreation, tourism, residents and the local community
  • Providing the opportunity for visitors to slow down and walk, or cycle between attractions safely.

Purpose of the project

The proposed shared path is designed with the community and visitors in mind - so people can move in a safe, enjoyable and vehicle-free manner between Punakaiki localities.

Project information

The proposed shared path has been designed in reference to the Cycle Trail Design Guide. It will be 1.8 metres - 2 metres wide and separated from the road.

Some points to note:

  • The shared path generally follows alongside the road incorporating existing road formation and footpaths
  • There will be a short section constructed away from the road, which will pass through the Nikau grove, just north of the Porari River
  • The pathway will have an asphalt surface where it is directly beside the road with a minimum 600mm separation for the white edge line
  • In places the path will incorporate existing and new concrete footpaths, which will be widened where required
  • A 2m width cannot practically be constructed in some areas, for example north of Bullock Creek and at the top of Dolomite Point, however the path will be made as wide as possible up to 2m
  • The path uses the existing walkway on the bridges between Waikori Place and Truman Track, which are less than 2m wide, but are wide enough for a single bicycle to safely cross in single file
  • While the track has been designed to Hartmount Place, construction will be to Truman Track, due to available funding.

Indicative project timeline

The design is largely complete and our proposals are out for public feedback. Construction of the shared path will commence in June or July 2021, once we have considered feedback from the community.
