SH1 Pukenui to Kaitaia

Changes on sections of State Highway 1 between Pukenui and Kaitaia are shown in the map and table below and took effect from 4 March 2024.  

These changes included permanent speed limit changes to 5 sections of state highway and new electronic variable speed limit (VSL) signs at Waihārara School and Awanui School, operating during school travel times.

SH15 Kaikohe to Otaika

Speed limit changes on sections of SH15 from Kaikohe to Otaika took effect from 13 May 2024. Changes include permanent speed limit changes to four sections of state highway and new electronic variable speed limit (VSL) signs across seven schools operating during school travel periods.

SH11 Kawakawa to Paihia and SH1 Kawakawa to Whangārei

Speed limit changes on short sections of SH11 between Kawakawa and Paihia and SH1 between Kawakawa and Whangārei took effect from 24 June 2024.

On State Highway 1, reduced speeds apply to three small sections of road through Kawakawa township, on Western Hills Drive around Whangārei Boys’ High School, and through Hukerenui around the Crows Nest Road intersection (including new electronic variable speed limit signs for Hukerenui Primary School).

On State Highway 11, changes include reduced speed limits through Paihia (along Marsden Road) and Te Haumi, and on a 1.15km stretch past Bay of Islands College. An electronic variable speed limit sign will further reduce the speed limit past the college during school travel periods.

SH14 Dargaville and Whangārei, SH1 Te Hana and Whangārei, SH15 Maungatapere

Speed limit changes on short sections of State Highway 1 between Te Hana and Whangārei take effect from 21 October 2024. These changes include a new school variable speed limit past Ruakākā School and reduce the speed limit to 60km/h through Te Hana.

On small sections of State Highway 14 between Dargaville and Whangārei and on SH15 through Maungatapere, speed limit changes take effect from 29 October 2024.

These changes include electronic variable speed limit signs outside Tangiteroria School, Maunu School, Pompallier College and Maungatapere School.

Other speed limit changes in this project

Under the Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024, any approved speed limit changes not implemented by 30 October 2024 have no legal effect.

For the Auckland-north Auckland speed review project this means the following speed limit changes can no longer be implemented, and the review process, including public consultation, needs to start again:

  • SH12 Ōmāpere to Kaikohe
  • SH12 Brynderwyn to Ōmāpere
  • SH10 Pakaraka to Taipa
  • SH1 Te Hana to Warkworth
  • SH16 Wellsford to Waimauku.
