SH1 Pukenui to Kaitaia

Changes on sections of State Highway 1 between Pukenui and Kaitaia are shown in the map and table below and took effect from 4 March 2024.

These changes included permanent speed limit changes to 5 sections of state highway and new electronic variable speed limit (VSL) signs at Waihārara School and Awanui School, operating during school travel times.

SH15 Kaikohe to Otaika

Speed limit changes on sections of SH15 from Kaikohe to Otaika took effect from 13 May 2024. Changes include permanent speed limit changes to four sections of state highway and new electronic variable speed limit (VSL) signs across seven schools operating during school travel periods.

We will implement Maungatapere township and school speed limit changes at a later date alongside other speed limit changes through Maungatapere on State Highway 14.

SH11 Kawakawa to Paihia and SH1 Kawakawa to Whangārei

Speed limit changes on short sections of SH11 between Kawakawa and Paihia and SH1 between Kawakawa and Whangārei take effect from 24 June 2024.

On State Highway 1, reduced speeds will apply to three small sections of road through Kawakawa township, on Western Hills Drive around Whangārei Boys’ High School, and through Hukerenui around the Crows Nest Road intersection (including new electronic variable speed limit signs for Hukerenui Primary School).

On State Highway 11, changes include reduced speed limits through Paihia (along Marsden Road) and Te Haumi, and on a 1.15km stretch past Bay of Islands College. An electronic variable speed limit sign will further reduce the speed limit past the college during school travel periods.

Other speed limit changes in this project

We intend to implement the speed limit changes on sections of the remaining state highways by early to mid-2025 and will let people know once we have confirmed the implementation dates. Keep an eye on this webpage for updated information or subscribe to receive future project updates.

What’s involved in implementing the speed limit changes?

Construction activity as part of implementing speed limit changes includes work to install poles, signs, and technology (such as for electronic variable speed limit signs) so that new speed limits are clearly displayed to road users.
