SH1 Pukenui to Kaitaia
The first changes will be on sections of State Highway 1 between Pukenui to Kaitaia as shown in the map and table below.

These new speed limits will apply from Monday 4 March 2024. Changes include permanent speed limit changes to 5 sections of state highway and new electronic variable speed limit (VSL) signs at Waiharara School and Awanui School, operating during school peak times.
We intend to implement the speed limit changes on sections of the remaining state highways by the end of 2024 and will let people know once we have confirmed the implementation dates. Keep an eye on this webpage for updated information or subscribe to receive future project updates.
What’s involved?
Construction activity includes work to install poles, signs, and technology along sections of the state highway network to clearly outline the new speed changes. Waka Kotahi will provide updates to local communities and motorists during construction and in advance of any changes.
