From Sunday 4 May to July 2025, we will be carrying out safety improvement works to increase the vehicle capacity on the southbound on-ramp and reinstate the signalised pedestrian crossing.

Work will be carried out at night-time Sundays to Wednesdays between 9pm and 5am and Thursdays between 10pm and 5am.

Our team may be on-site the week prior to work starting to set up during one overnight shift. The ramp will be closed and a detour in place during this time.

A schedule will be posted once dates are confirmed.

Please note:

  • There will be no work the night before a public holiday, eg no work on Sunday 1 June before King’s Birthday (2 June).
  • Closure times may be adjusted depending on traffic volumes or events in the area.
  • This work is weather dependent and may change from dates advertised. For real-time updates check NZTA Journey Planner.

Traffic impact

When the team are working the southbound on-ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Princes Street, Ōtāhuhu southbound on-ramp.  Alternatively, motorists can use Ellerslie interchange southbound on-ramp.

HPMV will need to use the HMPV approved detour to SH20 Neilson Street southbound on-ramp via Mt Wellington Highway, Sylvia Park Road, Great South Road, South Eastern Highway, Church Street and Neilson Street.

People should be prepared for congestion when the team sets up the detour and puts the closure in place. Congestion should ease as traffic starts following the detour.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians will still be able to cross at the bottom of the on-ramp with the assistance from traffic management.

Noise

There will be increased noise as the team carry out road widening and pedestrian improvement activities.
