NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) would like to advise you of the following important maintenance programme:

Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme – Auckland Port area

This work is part of a nationwide project called the Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme (CVSP), formally known as Weigh Right, which is developing an integrated network of cameras, weigh-in-motion scales and safety centres covering strategic routes across New Zealand.

The programme aims to ensure a level playing field for the industry, encourage compliant vehicle productivity, and improve road safety through targeted enforcement.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme (CVSP) 

In Auckland, we will be installing weigh-in-motion technology at five sites in the Port area. This will include weigh scales and cameras (WIM) and overhead electronic signage (VMS).

  • SH1 eastbound by Grafton Bridge (WIM technology)
  • SH16 eastbound by Symonds Street (WIM technology)
  • SH16 eastbound on Stanley Street (VMS)
  • SH16 westbound on The Strand (WIM technology)
  • SH16 westbound on The Strand (VMS technology)

Ramp closures:

  • SH1 northbound Wellesley Street off-ramp (exit 429 B).
  • SH1 northbound Port off-ramp (exit 429 C).

Recommended detour:

  • Exit SH1 Symonds Street northbound off-ramp (exit 429B) and detour via Symonds Street and Grafton Road.

Noise: There may be increased noise levels.

SH16 eastbound by Symonds Street

  • Tue 9 to Thu 11 Jul

Between 10pm and 5am

Full closure from SH1 southbound and SH16 eastbound to SH16 East Port link.

Ramp closures:

  • SH1 southbound from Fanshawe Street to Hobson Street.
  • SH16 eastbound Port link.

Recommended detour:

  • SH1 southbound: exit at SH1 southbound Fanshawe Street off-ramp and detour via Fanshawe Street and Hobson Street to SH1 Hobson Street southbound on-ramp.
  • SH1 southbound to SH16 Port: exit at SH1 southbound Fanshawe Street off-ramp and detour via Fanshawe Street, Customs Street East and Beach Road.
  • SH16 eastbound to Port: take link to SH1 southbound Hamilton (Exit 4 C). Exit at Gilles Ave and turn around using the Gillies Ave northbound on-ramp. Travel north on SH1 and take the SH1 northbound Port off-ramp (exit 429 C).

Noise: There may be increased noise levels.

SH16 Stanley Street

  • Late May/ early June

SH16 The Strand

  • 26 to 30 May

Between 9pm and 5am

Full closure westbound between Gladstone Road and Parnell Rise.

Recommended detour:

  • Motorists travelling along Quay Street heading towards the city will be detoured via Quay Street, Tangihua Street and Beach Road.
  • Motorists travelling along Quay Street heading away from the city will be detoured via Gladstone Road, St Stephens Ave and Parnell Rise.

SH1 Bombay southbound

  • Sun 7 to Wed 10 July

Between 9pm and 5am

Full closure southbound between Ramarama and Mill Road. 

Ramp closures:

  • Ramarama southbound on-ramp and off-ramp.
  • Mill Road southbound off-ramp.

Recommended detour:

  • Via Great South Road and Mill Road.

SH1 Bombay northbound

  • Sun 19 to Tue 21May
  • Thu 18 July
  • Sun 21 to Tue 22 July

Between 9pm and 5am

Full northbound closure between Nikau Road and Mill Road.

Ramp closures:

  • Nikau Road northbound on-ramp.
  • Beaver Road northbound off-ramp and on-ramp.
  • Mill Road northbound off-ramp.

Traffic management:

  • Traffic will still be able to travel north using one of the southbound lanes.

SH16 Royal Road safety improvement project

Our team will be carrying out safety improvement works to improve safety and connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians using the shared user paths by the Royal Road overbridge. This work will start at 9pm Sunday 26 May and finish 5am Thursday 4 July 2024.

Work will be carried out at night between 9pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday (excluding public holidays).

Residents:

  • There will be increased noise as our team will be carrying out excavation and installation activities.  
  • The lane closure will be across property driveways but traffic management will be in place to assist with the entry and exit from properties.

Motorists:

  • There will be eastbound lane restrictions on Royal Road between Makora Road and Moire Road. Traffic will still be able to travel in both directions.
  • On selected dates the SH16 Royal Road southbound on-ramp will be closed to traffic travelling westbound (towards Makora Road). There will be a signposted detour to the Lincoln Road southbound on-ramp via Makora Road, Triangle Road and Lincoln Road. We will of notify dates closer to the time through our email alerts.

SH18 removable barrier installation

Our team will be installing removable barriers on the motorway by Upper Harbour Bridge. This work will start at 9pm Sunday 26 May and finish at 5am Tuesday 11 June 2024.

Work will be carried out at night between 9pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday (excluding public holidays).

Residents:

  • There will be increased noise as our team will be carrying out excavation and installation activities.  

Motorists:

  • While work is being carried out there will be a full eastbound closure on SH18 between Brigham Creek Road and Squadron Drive.  Please follow the signposted detour via Brigham Creek Road, Hobsonville Road, Buckley Road and Squadron Drive.
  • On Sunday 26 May and Tuesday 11 June there will also be a westbound full closure between Squadron Road and Brigham Creek. Please follow the signposted detour via Squadron Drive, Buckley Road, Hobsonville Road and Brigham Creek.
