The NZ Transport Agency is progressing several key initiatives related to public transport. A brief overview of these key initiatives and links to further information is provided below.
To implement GPS 2024, NZTA is working with the public transport sector to increase the private share of public transport funding.
Through Budget 2024 the Government allocated $15 million of Crown funding over 2 years to deliver improvements to bus driver safety and working environments.
The bus driver fund will be administered by NZTA through one-off funding contributions on a co-funding basis towards the cost of agreed initiatives.

We are seeking feedback from the sector to inform a proposed update of national policies, requirements and guidelines for procurement in public transport. Feedback closed at 5 pm on 31 March 2025.
The purpose of the update is to achieve better value for money and long-term cost effectiveness.

The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is seeking feedback on proposed changes to improve how indexation is applied to bus contracts between operators and public transport authorities. Feedback closed at 5 pm on 30 August 2024.
