Where driveways intersect with a road a potential point of conflict between cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles exists. Shared paths and separated cycleways are often located closer to the road boundary and therefore intervisibility between driveway users and cyclists can be decreased.

Guidance for separated cycleways [PDF, 2.4 MB] at side roads and driveways has been developed to help reduce the risk of conflict.

Guidance for high-use driveway treatment for cycle paths and shared paths [PDF, 1.7 MB] provides a treatment solution for commercial and high-use access points on cycleways and shared paths. This treatment has been evaluated and found to improve safety via more consistent and slower speeds as well as improved stopping behaviour and reductions in near misses.
