Reversing a loaded truck can be difficult as you may have visibility problems.

Plan ahead and try to avoid reversing if you can. If reversing can’t be avoided, plan so that you are reversing to the right. This gives you visibility using your mirrors and by looking out the driver’s window. It is more difficult to reverse to the left because the only view you have is through the rear-view mirrors. In both cases you should use a helper. This person should stand where they can see the intended path of the vehicle and have eye contact with the driver.

Before reversing get out and check:

  • clearances above – wires, canopies, etc
  • whether the road or driveway will support your vehicle and its load
  • for any other hazards, for example, children.

Back slowly. Use your mirrors as well as looking out the windows and be aware of the front of the vehicle swinging as you turn. Start again if necessary.

If reversing an articulated vehicle, start with the tractor and trailer straight. Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction to where you want the trailer to go (for example, turn the steering wheel left to have the trailer move to the right). Only use small movements of the steering wheel.

Practise reversing. You should be able to reverse to the right in one move. Your driving test will include reversing.
