We’re resurfacing the Hutt highway

The Waka Kotahi Wellington Transport Alliance annual asphalt resurfacing season is underway on State Highway 2 in the Hutt to make the highway safer for road users. The resurfacing will take about 20 nights, spaced through the next six months.

Several sections of the highway have reached the stage in their life cycle where they need a thin layer of specialised asphalt on top of the existing road. This new layer improves surface texture, skid-resistance and water-drainage.

We must work at night on the busy state highway through the Hutt to avoid delays to traffic. As this asphalt is a thin surface layer, the machinery involved moves quickly along the road and long stretches of highway can be done in one night.

Residents living beside the highway will experience machinery working near their properties on one night or two nights at most. We will notify residents with more detail in advance of the work.

For roadworkers’ safety and to ensure the work is completed quickly, highway traffic will be detoured through local roads during work on Sites A, B, C and D.
