Project introduction

We want to make this stretch of SH3 safer for everyone that uses it. We're looking at installing safety barriers, rumble strips and widening the road to reduce crashes caused by vehicles running off the road. We'll also look at options for making it safer to cross the road in the Ōhaupō Township.

Making the road safer

SH3 Hamilton to Ōhaupō is classified as a high-risk rural road. Four people died and 30 were seriously injured on this stretch between 2006 and 2015. Most of these crashes were from drivers losing control and hitting trees and power poles or crashes at driveways and intersections. We are looking at making safety improvements to this road that will prevent more people dying and being seriously injured in crashes.

These improvements could include:

  • wide shoulders to give drivers more room to recover if they lose control
  • side safety barriers to stop drivers running off the road
  • rumble strips to give distracted drivers a wake-up call before they cross the centreline or run off the road
  • a wide centreline to reduce head-on collisions
  • improved road markings

We’re also looking at how we can make it safer for people in the township to cross the road.
