Our approach to sustainability
Waka Kotahi is committed to deliver good environmental and social outcomes as part of the design, construction and operation of our infrastructure projects. To help achieve these outcomes on the Takitimu North Link Stage One project, we are using the Infrastructure Sustainability Council rating scheme.

Sustainability is a holistic and comprehensive concept that informs ways of thinking, innovation, and decision-making. It promotes balanced and positive outcomes across social, cultural, economic and environmental areas.
These principles closely reflect the broader outcomes the Government is seeking to achieve through the activities it procures and delivers, including Takitimu North Link Stage One. Specifically, the outcome areas of increased access for New Zealand businesses, construction skills and training, and reduced carbon emissions and waste. We expect to contribute to the reporting and tracking of these outcomes.

The Fulton Hogan and HEB Joint Venture working on the Takitimu North Link project is committed to delivering a sustainable project. The Takitimu North Link Sustainability Policy sets out our commitments. To achieve this, we will:
- Adopt a strong partnership approach with Waka Kotahi and hapū partnership group Te Paerangi.
- Integrate sustainability considerations into all our project decisions and risk management
- Ensure that all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy, are educated on sustainability and are committed to implementing sustainable practices to maximise the social, economic, environmental, and cultural value through our design and construction expertise.
- Leave a legacy which brings benefits to the communities and environments we interact with; enhancing environmental, social, cultural, and economic outcomes.
- Make partners and suppliers aware of our Sustainability Policy and assist them to adopt sound sustainable practices.
- Review, report, and continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.
To reflect this policy, the following objectives and targets have been set and are outlined in the Sustainability Management Plan:
- >10% reduction in carbon embodied in materials.
- >10% reduction in energy (electricity and fuel) used in construction and operation.
- >10% reduction in water used in construction and operation.
- >25% of waste diverted from landfill.
- >2.5% of the construction value delivered by SMEs based in the Bay of Plenty region.
- >2.5% of the construction value delivered by Māori owned businesses.
- Maintain freshwater connectivity.
- Minimise harm to native fauna.
