We are finalising plans for further sections of SH1 to be fully closed right down to Waiouru. For the townships, we intend to use nightworks only to lessen disruption.
A draft programme, which is subject to change especially due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
Finished
- SH29 Piarere to North Tīrau: 29 September - 22 October (night closure only) - 9.5 lane km of works.
- SH5 Tīrau to SH28 Putāruru: First closure was 9 September – 4 October 2024. The final asphalt surface was done under night closure from 20 January 2025 to 4 February.
Underway (or soon to be underway)

Work will take approx. 4 weeks to complete (weather permitting). There will also be 2 weeks of nightworks works (stop/go) for final surfacing from 7 – 17 April 2025.
- SH32 Tokoroa to SH30 Ātiamuri: 1st closure ran from 7 October and was partially opened on 21 November 2024 and full opened on 27 November 2024. Final resurfacing under night closures is currently scheduled for November 2025.

There will be another closure from 3 March 2025 for 5 weeks to carry out road rebuilding in the southern section of this zone, and do some final work in the northern part. We will need to come back for final surfacing – currently scheduled for November 2025.
- Eastern Taupō Arterial: Full closure 11 November – 6 December 2024. We will be back for the final surfacing in September 2025.
- SH41 Turangi to SH49 Waiouru: 13 January 2025 for approximately 8 weeks – full closure for rebuilds including upgrading Mangatoetoenui Bridge. Dates for final surfacing TBC
Future
- SH1/SH5 Roundabout Taupo to Turangi: Scheduled for October – November 2025 (actual dates and duration to be confirmed).
- Tīrau township to SH1/SH5 roundabout: Spring 2025 (to be confirmed) – nightworks only.
The specifics of future closure, including durations and detour routes, are still being worked on and further information will be communicated as soon as it is available. We know the more notice and certainty we can give people, the better.
There will be additional further work required in most sections a few months after the initial closures to put the final asphalt surface coat on where the road has been rebuilt. It is essential to give the rehabilitated pavement time to cure under normal traffic conditions before the final surfacing asphalt is applied. If this is not done, the pavement layer may continue to be compacted after the final coat is laid, resulting in an uneven road surface (rutting).
