Duke Street intersection consultation
NZTA wants to improve the above intersection safer which we have flagged as a safety concern due to the number and type of crashes and near misses there.
To increase safety and reduce crashes at this intersection, we’re proposing left turns only out of the east side of Duke Street (the one-way section). This will increase safety by removing straight through vehicle movements across two traffic lanes of SH1 to Duke Street west.
The NZTA is working on a plan to make Dunedin’s SH1 one-way system safer and work better for everyone. As part of this we’ve identified the SH1 Cumberland/Duke Street Dunedin intersection as a safety risk because of its concerning crash history, that has seen 9 crashes between 2019 and 2023. Two-thirds involved drivers travelling directly across two busy south bound traffic lanes of SH1 from the intersection on the eastern side of Duke Street.
To improve safety and reduce crashes at this intersection, we’re proposing left turns only out of the east side of Duke Street (the one-way section). This will increase safety by removing straight through vehicle movements across SH1 to the west section of Duke Street.
This is the NZTA’s preferred safety option.
Thank you for your feedback on this proposed change. All submissions in accordance with section 22AB of the Land Transport Act 1998 will be carefully considered before a final decision is made, or whether other options need to be considered.
