Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway is section 2 of the Northland Corridor, a 100-kilometre strategic route connecting Auckland to Whangārei. This section is the longest of the corridor, a 45km stretch of 4-lane highway, which includes the Brynderwyn Hills alternative.
April 2025
Te Hana to Port Marsden (including a Brynderwyn Hills alternative) is section 2 of the Northland Corridor, one of the 3 Roads of National Significance (RoNS) that will improve connections from Auckland to Whangārei.
The Northland Corridor will support economic growth and productivity, reduce congestion, improve safety, support housing development, and provide a more resilient roading network.
Find more information on Roads of National Significance on the Northland Corridor project page.
An emerging preferred corridor has been announced for Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway. This includes an alternative to the Brynderwyns Hills, which remains a priority.
To select an emerging preferred corridor we have taken all previous work done in the corridor into account, and looked at factors such as recent weather events, how the corridor performs as a whole, ground and soil conditions, and environmental and cultural impacts. These factors all feed into how much the road will cost and how it will be built.
The emerging preferred corridor proposes:
An emerging preferred corridor is a larger area than the final route will be. Within the emerging preferred corridor there are still several different places the final road may go.
We will start to reach out to potentially impacted landowners who are within the emerging preferred corridor to let them know the next steps. This will take some time due to the size of the project, but we are working hard to contact people as quickly as we can.

CloseBetween April and August, we will continue design investigations within the emerging preferred corridor to test our thinking and help us refine the proposed route.
We will continue to work closely with our iwi and hapū partners and key stakeholders, and to share our progress with landowners and the community as we work at pace on the Northland Corridor project.
We expect to be able to provide more information by August/September 2025.
