From Tuesday night, 14 March, rumble strip is being installed along the centreline of State Highway 6, between Kawatiri Junction and O’Sullivans Junction, part of the new alternate highway between Picton and Christchurch.
State Highway 1 has been closed all this weekend south of Kaikoura between Peketa/ the Kahutara River and Goose Bay due to fresh slips triggered by rainfall in several places. It is likely to be closed Monday, 13 March as well.
State Highway 1 has remained closed all day after being closed earlier this week after rain and subsequent rockfall near the slips between Peketa and Goose Bay, south of Kaikoura.
The first, national Aotearoa Bike Challenge has successfully encouraged more Kiwis to cycle, with more than 14,000 people from over 1000 organisations taking part, including almost 4000 new riders.

Drivers wanting to head to or from Kaikoura should use the Inland Road (Route 70) via Waiau. The aim is to reopen to daytime traffic on Thursday however, we will update mid this afternoon. The normal open hours for the highway are 6 am to 8 pm daily.
