Important information for drivers.
Lower North Island:
- From this Sunday, resurfacing works are planned for State Highway 2, Masterton to Carterton. Work crews will be on-site until 14 March.
- Regular users of State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, must plan for two weeks of night closures. These works, which will see new safety improvements installed, are due to begin on 10 March.
- People heading to Martinborough on Saturday can expect a closure on State Highway 53 as the town holds its annual fair. State Highway 53 will be closed between Ohio Street and Memorial Square from 5 am to 6.30 pm. Please plan your travel accordingly.
Top of the South Island:
- Drivers travelling between Picton and Christchurch must allow for extra travel time. With the end of the summer highway maintenance season underway, there are a number of roadwork sites on State Highway 1 from North Canterbury to Marlborough that will create travel delays. Drivers are recommended to allow up to an extra hour for their journeys when travelling between Christchurch and Picton on Tuesday and Thursday. This is especially important for drivers with ferry connections in Picton.
- With the grape harvest underway in Marlborough, drivers must also watch for trucks and harvesters. Extra care is needed on the region’s roads, particularly when overtaking.
- In Nelson, safety barrier works are underway on State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive. Road users can expect lane and shoulder closures over the next couple of weeks. Night closures are also planned from 17 March.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 2 March). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
