Overview

For the third consecutive year, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has published the findings of a comprehensive survey into New Zealanders’ attitudes toward road safety issues and behaviours, and how these are trending over time.

The Public Attitudes to Road Safety - 2022 Report, prepared with Kantar Public , details the results of responses provided by more than 3,300 New Zealanders to a broad range of questions focussed on specific road safety topics, including attitudes to enforcement, speed, vehicle safety, impaired driving, distraction, driver fatigue and personal safety.

The survey has been undertaken periodically since 1974 and annually since 1994 to evaluate attitudes to road safety issues, primarily alcohol-impaired driving and speed. From 1994 to 2004 the survey was conducted for the Land Transport Safety Authority. The Ministry of Transport conducted the survey from 2005 until 2016, which is the foundation of the new survey programme under Waka Kotahi and Road to Zero.

3,330 people in two streams were surveyed for the 2022 survey. The research fieldwork was carried out between 14 July – 16 September 2022.
