Project update

The installation of the flexible median barrier is complete. This was the final safety improvement to be made as part of this project.

About the project

The project involved realigning the 1.7km stretch of road by easing its curves, incorporating a new southbound passing lane, wider shoulders, median and side barriers, as well as a right turn bay into College Road. Realigning the road improves the safety of this key freight route connecting Hawke’s Bay and Manawatū and provides safer passing opportunities.

The completion of this project marks the delivery of 10 of the 13 Regional Investment Package projects. As part of the NZ Upgrade Programme, these 13 state highway projects address key challenges our regional highway networks face and contribute to creating a safer and more resilient transport network, supporting regional development.

Project timeline

Construction on the realignment began at the end of October 2020 and was completed in December 2022. The installation of the median barrier was completed in May 2023.
