Authorised access to the register

Anyone can apply for authorisation to access names and addresses in the Motor Vehicle Register.

Applications for access are made under section 241 of the Land Transport Act 1998. We consult with the Ombudsman, Privacy Commissioner and Police Commissioner (our advising agencies) before deciding whether to grant an authorisation. An authorisation should be for a specific purpose and is subject to any conditions we specify.

There are a standard set of terms and conditions for the 3 most common types of applicant, which are vehicle traders, finance companies and insurers, and fuel stations.
