Queenstown Lakes District Council has installed 10.5km of guardrail along steep valleys, sharp bends and alongside the lake-edge with the aim of reducing the severity of run-off road crashes on the road to Glenorchy.

The first two stages of the project installing around 3km of side barrier as well as new road markings and signage were completed in December 2022, and remaining side barriers installed by October 2023.

The road to Glenorchy is winding and runs along the lake-edge. These roadside barriers protect people travelling along this road by reducing the severity of run-off road crashes and preventing collisions with more severe roadside hazards.
