Vertical deflection devices are local traffic calming devices that use vertical deflection to slow motor-vehicle traffic to encourage slower speeds and improve road safety. These devices include:

  • speed humps;
  • speed cushions;
  • raised tables; and
  • pedestrian platforms.

Guidelines to assist with the selection, application, and design of vertical deflection devices are in the Waka Kotahi Speed Management Guide toolbox.

This manual describes the signs and road marking to be used for vertical deflection devices.

Any vertical deflection device must (TCD Rule Clause 7.9(3)) either:

  • be illuminated; or
  • have reflective delineators; or
  • have reflective signs installed.

The following sections provide guidance on how signs and road markings for vertical deflection devices should be applied.
