The importance of the routes and their traffic volumes are the main factors that should determine the level of road markings and delineation devices. However, for any markings and devices that are likely to be fixed to the road surface the actual sealed road width must also be considered.

As part of the ONRC, Table 2‑1 shows a simple standard of road marking and delineation based on function.

The table does not make specific reference to the provision of facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

Guidance on cyclists and pedestrians is provided in Appendix D: One Network Road Functional Classification summary.

Table 2‑1 notes:

  1. All other regulatory and permanent signs are determined as per road environment and speeds within the TCD manual.
  2. All markings are to be paint and reflectorised unless otherwise specified.
  3. Where safety risk allows eg fewer intersections, mode separation for active users.
  4. Not recommended in urban areas where there are noise sensitive activities.
  5. If high numbers of active road users.
