Delineation and road marking along all roads, either divided or undivided, is achieved by a means of various painted or physical features. Those features include:

  • Treatments in the centre of the road including:
    • centre-lines;
    • flush medians;
    • no-passing lines;
    • wide centre-lines; and
    • road safety barriers.
  • Treatments at the edge of the road including:
    • edgelines;
    • diagonal shoulder markings;
    • edge marker posts; and
    • road safety barriers and sight rails.
  • Other treatments including:
    • lane lines;
    • audio tactile profiled markings;
    • raised pavement markers; and
    • delineator posts.

The following sections outline the information in relation to each of the treatments including the legislation and guidelines for delineation and road markings for various road types.

The retroreflective materials used on delineation devices, including delineation posts should conform to AS/NZS Standard 1906.1:2017.
