The requirements for signing and signs are listed in Table 17‑1 and should be used where an RCA has designated a special vehicle lane. Specific sign detail information can be found in the TCD manual sign specifications and Schedule 1 of the TCD Rule.

Bus lane

 Traffic sign which displays bus symbol and a word lane underneath

Should be installed on sections of road or street where the RCA has restricted the use of the lane to buses or certain high occupancy and other authorised vehicles and must be installed if other than a 24 hour restriction.

Additional words or symbols to define the nature of the restriction, its period of operation and to indicate the start or end of the restriction may be shown on supplementary plates installed immediately below R4-7 and R4-7.1 signs. The width of a supplementary plate should match the width of the sign with which it is used.

Note that cyclists are permitted to use bus lanes, however, when a R4-7.1 sign is used cyclists are excluded from using the bus lane.

Table 17‑1 notes:

  1. Special vehicle lane signs should be installed along the side of the roadway subject to the restriction, at the start of the reserved lane, at intervals of approximately 100m, after each intersection and at the end of the restriction.
  2. The signs indicating the start of a special vehicle lane should be visible to an approaching driver for a distance of at least 120m in rural areas and at least 60m in other areas.
