When an RCA provides a special route or sets aside a specific area of roadway for cycling, the RCA must install signs or markings to indicate the restriction. The signs are shown in Table 15‑3.

Table 15‑3: Road user restrictions for cyclists

Sign code

Example

Description/use

R5-1

No cycling

Traffic sign of a cycle symbol with red slash prohibition and circular border

R5-1 signs should be installed:

  • on a footpath where cycling has been prohibited but continued use of the footpath by cyclists is experienced; and
  • when physical barriers to cycle movement are not feasible (eg at entrances to motorways), but it is prohibited for cyclists to proceed.

No sign other than an R5-2 No pedestrians, or R5-5 Pedestrians sign may be attached to the R5-1 sign or its support.

For sign location, refer to notes 1 and 2.

For the use of the R5-1 sign symbol on motorway threshold signs, refer to TCD manual Part 10

TCD manual Part 10

R5-6

All cycles must exit

Traffic sign of a black diagonal arrow pointing up left and a cycle symbol underneath inside the red square border

Subject to formal authorisation by the RCA, an R5-6 sign is used to direct all cyclists onto a particular path or route.
No other sign may be attached to an R5-6 sign or its support. This sign must only be used where it indicates a regulatory requirement.

For sign location, refer to note 1.

Table 15‑3 notes:

  1. The sign should be located where approaching cyclists have an uninterrupted view of it over a distance of at least 30m.
  2. If installed in conjunction with an R5-2 or R5-5 sign, the R5-1 sign should be located below that sign.
