State highway safety plans

Our State Highway Safety Plan provides guidelines on using engineering to make our roads safe. The plan reflects our commitment to reducing the number of crashes on the state highways that result in death or injury.

About the State Highway Safety Plan

The plan has two key aims:

  • To provide a consistent, safe and forgiving road environment with no surprises for road users.

  • To provide a safe working environment for maintenance and construction activities.

It covers initiatives such as:

  • speed management

  • speed zoning

  • reducing vehicle/train crashes

  • considering the needs of vulnerable road users

  • keeping vehicles on the roadway

  • minimising the consequences of leaving the roadway

  • reducing head-on and across-median crashes.
