Frontal impact compliance status of vehicles by vehicle make

These lists show the Class MA vehicles (passenger cars) by make and model that manufacturers have advised as meeting (or not meeting) New Zealand's frontal impact requirements. For completeness we have included some lists that were produced at the time frontal-impact legislation was being implemented in various countries, and some of these lists have not been updated since then.

Please note that the information on these lists is supplied by vehicle manufacturers, and is not exhaustive. The NZ Transport Agency has taken every reasonable precaution to ensure the accuracy of this information. Contact an entry certifier if you are in doubt about any of the information in these lists.

Frontal impact compliance status of vehicles by vehicle make

Important notice concerning the following models:

Toyota Estima/Emina/Lucida (CXR10G, CXR11G, CXR20G, CXR21G, TCR10G, TCR10W, TCR11G, TCR11W, TCR20G, TCR20W, TCR21G, TCR21W)

Nissan Serena (C23 Series) Nissan Largo (W30 Series)

Ford Freda (SG5WF, SGEWF, SGL3F, SGLWF, SGL5F, SGLRF)

Mazda Bongo Friendee (SG5W, SGEW, SGL3, SGLW, SGL5, SGLR)

Despite having production lives extending beyond 1/1/1996, many of the above class MA vehicles do not comply with approved frontal impact standards. The reason for this is that under Japanese law they were not required to meet frontal impact standards until 1999. However, the above models may still be certified for use on New Zealand roads provided they have been issued an exemption from meeting the requirements of the Frontal Impact Rule under section 166 of the Transport Act 1998.

The director of the Land Transport Safety issued such an exemption to a number of individual vehicles. A copy of this exemption is presented below. Any vehicle with a chassis number falling within the ranges listed in the below notice are exempted from the requirement that it must meet an approved frontal impact standard.

Exemption From Specified Requirement of Land Transport Rule: Frontal Impact 2001

Pursuant to section 166 (1) of the Land Transport Act 1998 (the Act) and being satisfied on the matters in section 166 (2) of the Act, and under delegated authority, I, John Patrick White, Manager Safer Vehicles Policy, exempt each vehicle included in the chassis number range identified in Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4 from the requirement in 2.3 (1) of Land Transport Rule: Frontal Impact 2001 (“the Rule”) to meet a version, as specified in 2.3 (4), of one of the approved vehicle standards in 2.3 (2).
