Ecological impact assessment guidelines

These guidelines are to support and promote good ecological impact assessment (EcIA) practices on Waka Kotahi projects. Specifically, these guidelines:

  • provide specific guidance for land transport project development in relation to ecological matters
  • describe how EcIA works within, and supports, Waka Kotahi project development and delivery frameworks, including statutory processes (Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and Wildlife Act 1953)
  • provide guidance to ensure compliance with Waka Kotahi strategic environmental objectives and outcomes, supporting Z/19 Taumata Taiao – Environment and Sustainability Standard
  • ensure EcIA for Waka Kotahi projects is consistent in approach as well as fit for purpose.

These guidelines are intended for ecologists undertaking EcIAs. It also includes information applicable to the wider project team involved in preparing, implementing, and supporting the EcIA process and the subsequent management of ecological effects.
