We have restored State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge, making it a safer, more resilient route for Northland.
This project has been a major undertaking: 22 months of hard work, over 1300 piles installed, and more than 300 anchors securing the piles to the maunga (mountain). Alongside this, we’ve resurfaced the road, upgraded guardrails, and improved drainage so the road is better able to handle future weather events.
Our heartfelt thanks to the Northland community for your support and patience. This was more than just a road reopening – it was about reconnecting whānau, friends, and the Far North community.
