Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a new technology that challenges pre-existing consenting processes.

It is recommended that consenting authorities engage with charging operators early so the placement, layout and safety of a charging station protects the interests of the general public.

The Transport Agency considers that charging stations are not ‘Works’ under the Electricity Act 1992 so should be considered under the relevant installation process.

For charging stations intended for crown or private property (off-road) follow the installing a charging station off-road process.

For charging stations intended for on-road, including areas within the road reserves such as rest areas or footpaths, follow the installing a charging station on-road process.

It is important to note that RCA approval is required for associated facilities, such as parking spaces and access. RCA approval can be issued subject to conditions – such as safe entry and exit, site layout and associated facilities – and may be withheld if a site cannot be safely accessed or is otherwise inappropriate.
