This page relates to the 2018-21 National Land Transport Programme.
This section sets out information about activities invested in through the Road Policing Programme which is prepared by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and NZ Police, approved by the Minister of Transport in consultation with the Minister of Police, and delivered by NZ Police. The Road Policing Programme is funded through Vote Police but the investment source is the National Land Transport Fund. Police activities approved by the minister must be included in the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP), as stated in section 19C(e) of the Land Transport Management Act 2003(external link).

As part of the wider context of road policing Waka Kotahi, NZ Police and the Ministry of Transport are progressing towards a strength-based partnership, and the implementation of an improved operating model and investment approach for road policing.
The government has set out its expectations of the land transport system in the 2018 Government Policy Statement on Land Transport (external link)(GPS).

Although the core programme of road policing activities is continuous in nature, to access funding from the NLTF, for convenience it is developed through the 'Improvement activity' module in Transport Investment Online(external link) (TIO) rather than through its own module.
