Improvements to Auckland’s iconic Karangahape Road have created a safer, more attractive place for the local community and offer better walking and cycling options.

A colourful hub with a flourishing residential and business community, Karangahape Road is one of the busiest roads in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. Thousands of people travel along it every day. And with projections that a million more people will call Auckland home in 30 years – this number is likely to grow.

An event in June 2021 celebrated the recent improvements in the area. These changes aim to make this already vibrant and dynamic street even more people friendly by:

  • decluttering footpaths to create more space for people and activities
  • adding a cycleway in each direction that connects to existing (and planned) cycleways
  • adding more bike parking, better lighting and new street furniture
  • adding peak hour bus lanes to improve the reliability and predictably of buses
  • enhancing the natural environment with rain gardens, landscaping and trees
  • creating an environment that reflects Māori cultural values.

More people are opting to walk, cycle, scoot, skate or bus in the area. These improvements will help them do this safely and encourage more people to leave the car at home – helping reduce congestion and carbon emissions.

Lucie, a local who travels on Karangahape Road during her daily commute, says “The new cycle path makes it so much more appealing to jump on my bike to ride into work. I can now get from Karangahape Road to downtown Auckland solely using off-road cycle paths so it’s a safe and healthy way to travel.”

These improvements were funded by Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi.

This isn’t the end of improvements on Karangahape Road. In 2024 Karangahape Station will open as part of the new underground City Rail Link, which is expected to carry up to 54,000 passengers an hour. This will bring a massive influx of people moving to and from the area.

As part of the 2021–24 National Land Transport Programme, more than $3 billion will be invested on activities in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland that get more people moving in ways that are healthier, more environmentally friendly and help reduce congestion.
