The NZ Transport Agency is warning that high winds are hitting the lower North Island, and urges motorists to take care and watch out for cyclists and motorcyclists.
The Transport Agency is advising motorists that the high winds mean extra care is required on the roads, particularly for high-sided vehicles, cyclists and motorcyclists and people travelling on the State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road.
"Wind adds an element of unpredictability to travel, and while we can't prevent it, by taking extra care we can reduce the risk it presents," says Regional Performance Manager Mark Owen.
"High winds can make it more difficult to control bicycles or motorcycles, so we urge motorists to be extra alert and take extra care when sharing the road as a sudden gust can change the trajectory of our fellow two-wheeled road users,"
Contractors will be closely monitoring the Rimutaka Hill Road for safety.
“Before hitting the road, we advise everyone to check the latest highway conditions or traffic cams online so you’re armed with the best information to help you on your journey.”
Mr Owen says the joint Transport Agency/Wellington City Council Traffic Operations Centre will be working 24/7 to monitor traffic conditions, manage disruptions, and keep motorists informed.
The Transport Agency’s website is regularly updated with information about most delays, closures and detours at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic, and live traffic cams at www.nzta.govt.nz/webcams-wellington(external link). People can also get real-time twitter updates on @nztawgtn(external link)
People can also call the Transport Agency's free phone on 0800 4HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49), which can also be used to report any significant road issues or hazards which people may come across during their travels.
The NZTA also uses other technology to provide information to enable drivers to make better informed choices about their travel. On The Move is a free service which enables people to sign up for information about crashes, road works and driving conditions on their frequently used routes - to sign up, go to www.onthemove.govt.nz(external link).
