Wind warning for sections of Auckland’s motorways

|

The NZ Transport Agency is advising all road users care is needed crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the Southwestern Motorway’s Mangere Bridge spanning Manukau Harbour because of strong winds.

“Both bridges remain open to all traffic, but we are posting electronic messages on our motorway gantries to alert drivers to be aware of strong gusts while crossing these exposed sections of highway,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon.

The Transport Agency says gusts have been averaging around 58kph, with one gust recorded on the harbour bridge at 74kph.

Auckland Civil Defence says westerly winds are forecast to be at the strongest between 5-10pm.

“For safe travel, people should increase following distances, especially when motorways are more crowded during this afternoon’s peak,” Mr Gliddon says.

A king tide is expected to peak in the Waitemata Harbour at about 10.20 tonight.   The westerly and southwesterly direction of the wind generally means there’s a low risk of flooding on low-lying sections of motorway. However, the Transport Agency says drivers should be aware that wave splash may affect driving in some areas.
