The NZ Transport Agency and Nelson City Council are embarking on a joint investigation to examine the feasibility of a number of different walking and cycling options to improve the functioning and safety of walking and cycling along rocks road as it is a key link into the city's wider walking and cycling network in the city.
As part of this investigation, the NZTA and NCC will consider the impacts of those walking and cycling options on the future capacity, safety and functioning of Rocks Road for all users to ensure this important transport link can fulfil its function as a state highway to move people and goods around the city.
"Councillors had a productive information sharing session with representatives of NZTA today and we acknowledge the need to move forward with this investigation for walking and cycling options along Rocks Road," says Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio. "We will continue to work closely together with NZTA to ensure Nelson's roading needs are understood and taken into account in future planning."
NZTA Regional Director Central Jenny Chetwynd says the NZTA acknowledges that NCC does not wish to see clearways or three-laning along Rocks Road. The study will not investigate these as options.
"Nelson has a thriving walking and cycling culture, and a new pedestrian and cycle facility will help to foster that enthusiasm. Through this investigation we can identify the best way to incorporate a facility into this corridor that will provide safe and efficient use of this important transport corridor for everyone, however they choose to travel."
