More fine weather this week has been a boon for crews working on the state highway network across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
The push is on to complete as much work as possible over the next month, says Cara Lauder, Waikato System Manager at Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.
“While some forms of work, such as asphalt resurfacing, can take place beyond March, we will be aiming to complete as much of our chipsealing and road re-building before the end of March. As we get closer to Easter temperatures start to drop, which affects our ability to ensure quality outcomes on the ground.
“Most of our networks are in a good position to deliver the vast majority, if not all of their annual renewal programme. This will be a great achievement in the face of significant adversity created by the various weather events over the past months.”
Fatigue management will be a key concern during this time, and road users can play their part.
“All crews do their best to keep traffic moving, either through using detour routes or managing operations and stop/go traffic management effectively. By complying with traffic management signage, and any directions from crews, road users help the team work effectively. This allows us to get off the road as soon as possible, returning the road to normal operation.
“We unfortunately continue to hear reports of poor behaviour from road users towards crews. This is unacceptable, crews are doing their best and do not deserve this.”
