Waikare Gorge road closed next Saturday

|

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that State Highway 2 at Waikare Gorge will be closed for resealing from 8am to 2pm on Saturday 29 February.

25 February 2020 - Update

In an effort to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible, only one lane will be closed on State Highway 2 at Waikare Gorge while resealing is underway from 8am to 2pm on Saturday 29 February.

Stop/go traffic management and a temporary speed restriction of 30km/h will be in place during the lane closure.

Motorists should expect delays of up to one hour and are advised to plan ahead or delay their travel.

Because the road is so narrow through this area, both lanes will need to be fully closed to traffic. Emergency services will be escorted through when needed.

“The constrained working environment on the narrow Waikare Gorge road does not meet our safety expectations for our workers. We want to ensure our road crews are working in a safe environment while they carry out the necessary repairs,” Regional Transport Systems Manager Oliver Postings says.

“As there is no viable detour around Waikare Gorge, we are asking people to delay their travel that day until after 2pm if possible. We understand the inconvenience and will minimise disruption where we can.”

The Transport Agency took into consideration major events in the Hawke’s Bay when choosing this date, to ensure there would not be a higher volume of traffic on the road than usual.

The work is weather-dependant and any change to the date will be publicised via the Transport Agency’s social media accounts.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
