Top of the south drivers – stay safe and be ready for wet weather driving

|

Drivers travelling in the top of the South Island need to take care on the roads with weather watches in place for Marlborough and the Tasman Ranges west of Motueka.

The Metservice has heavy rain warnings for Tasman - west of Motueka, and eastern Marlborough, south of Ward.

The weather will affect State Highway 1 as far south as Kaikoura and State Highway 60 in Tākaka/Golden Bay.

Heavy rain increases the risk of slips, rockfalls, and localised flooding on these routes, and drivers should be prepared for hazards while driving.

Drivers with Picton ferry connections should also keep a close eye on weather and road conditions and allow extra time for their travel.

Road users must drive to the conditions. Make sure you use your headlights when visibility is poor, and watch your speed and following distances. Take the time needed to get to your destination safely.

It is also important to check road and weather conditions before you travel, as bad weather can see roads closed at short notice.
