Waka Kotahi is reminding drivers throughout Taranaki to take extra care on the roads, as a heavy rain warning for the region is issued.
Metservice has an orange heavy rain warning in place for the region between 2pm today and 5am on Friday at this stage.
Between 150 and 200 mm of rain is expected to fall north of Mount Taranaki, including coastal areas, and between 350 and 450 mm around the mountain.
Waka Kotahi Manawatū-Whanganui / Taranaki Journey Manager Liesl Dawson says all road users should be prepared for delays while travelling.
“With potential for surface flooding and slips especially north of the mountain, we’re asking people to keep an eye on the forecast before travelling and be safe out there.
“That might mean delaying your travel, or if you do need to use the roads, driving to conditions and being mindful of other road users. Even if the roads haven’t been flooded, they might be wet and if that’s the case they will be slippery,” says Ms Dawson.
“We are keeping a close watch on the situation and there’s always the potential for short notice closures. Please take care around our emergency works sites, where traffic management is already in place.”
