Update 2 May

Due to bad weather forecast for the next few days, this work has been postponed and will be re-scheduled for a later date.

24 April 2013, 10.18am

Next week, contractors will return to State Highway 6, Rocks Road, to continue cliff stabilisation work. It follows earlier work carried out in March.

The work will also see the final removal of a dying oak tree overhanging the road that poses a risk to traffic.

During the work, State Highway 6, Rocks Rd, will be reduced to one lane and subject to a 30 km/hr temporary speed restriction and Stop/Go traffic controls. The lane closest to the cliff face has to be closed to traffic for safety reasons.

The work has been timed to be done at night to minimise delays and disruptions for road users as much as possible. Full access through the site will be available to emergency services at all times. During the day, the road will be fully open to all traffic.

Residents and regular users of the route are urged to be aware of these works and plan their travel accordingly. This is essential maintenance intended to improve the safety of a critical Nelson transport connection.

Works schedule

  • Cliff stabilisation work will be carried out over five nights from 30 April to 5 May (Sunday to Thursday) between 7.00 pm and 6.00 am
  • The oak tree will be removed on the night of 30 April between 10 pm and 4 am. Five-minute delays are expected for traffic stops while this work is completed.
