Update: State Highway 1 closed south of Picton following serious crash

Update 7:17pm:

State Highway 1 has reopened to one lane under stop/go traffic management following this morning’s fatal crash near Tuamarina.

The crash, involving two trucks, occurred shortly before 10am this morning. Police have confirmed one person died in the incident.

The highway was closed for over eight and a half hours while Police carried out a crash investigation, and the road was cleared.

Cranes and heavy towing vehicles were needed to remove the trucks from the crash scene.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their patience and cooperation while State Highway 1 was closed today. Ongoing delays can be expected until the highway is fully reopened.

Drivers travelling between Picton and Blenheim can expect delays as emergency services attend a serious crash near Tuamarina.

The crash, involving two trucks, occurred north of Bush Road shortly before 10am this morning.

State Highway 1 is currently closed.

Police confirm the Serious Crash Unit has been notified and the highway is expected to remain closed at the crash site for several hours.

A detour is available for light vehicles only via Queen Charlotte Drive and State Highway 6.

This route cannot be used by heavy vehicles.

The detour requires extra travel time and drivers must allow extra time for their journey.

Drivers must follow the instructions of emergency services and contractors, avoid the area, or delay their travel.
