SH35 between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay to close overnight

|

State Highway 35 between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay will close overnight from 6pm as river levels continue to rise.

A heavy rain warning for the region remains in place until 6am tomorrow.

Roading crews across the Tairāwhiti network have been closely monitoring the already sodden SH35 and SH2 today.

Waka Kotahi Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti System Manager Martin Colditz says the water levels in the Hikuwai River have been steadily rising during the last few hours, causing surface flooding on the network.

“We will be closing this stretch of road from 6pm today and the situation will be reassessed at first light tomorrow.

“Closing the road is always a last resort, but the safety of all road users and crews is our number one priority. We want to thank road users and communities for their continued understanding.

“Please drive to the conditions if you’re out and about over the weekend.”
