Update: SH2 north of Wairoa now open to two lanes

State Highway 2 at Whakaki, north of Wairoa, has reopened to two lanes, following this morning’s truck crash.

State Highway 2 at Whakaki, north of Wairoa, has reopened to two lanes, following this morning’s truck crash.

The crash closed the road until mid-morning when crews were able to reopen the road to one lane with stop / go traffic management in place.

Since then, the overturned truck and remaining debris have been removed and the road swept. Please continue to drive to the conditions while any backlog of traffic is cleared. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks all road users for their patience today while the clean up took place.

9.30am

One lane of State Highway 2 at Whakaki, just north of Wairoa, is now open to one lane, following an earlier truck crash.

Stop/go traffic management is in place with a temporary lower speed in place, while logs are cleared from the road.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is reminding road users to expect delays while the backlog of traffic is cleared and the stop/go traffic management remains in place. Please drive to the conditions.

9.15am

A stretch of State Highway 2 just north of Wairoa remains closed following a truck roll earlier this morning. A tow truck is on site, along with a crane and the clean up has commenced. The truck is currently blocking the road and logs are strewn across the highway. There is no detour available and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is reminding drivers to avoid the area for now, if possible. Crews are working as quickly as possible to clear the road and NZTA appreciates the wait will be frustrating for those waiting either side of the closure.

7.45am

State Highway 2 at Whakaki, just north of Wairoa, is closed after a logging truck rolled earlier this morning. Logs are currently blocking the stretch of state highway, west of Hinepua Road, and crews are currently travelling to site. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises road users to avoid this stretch of road and expect delays if travelling in that area. NZTA thanks road users for their patience while the road is closed.
