Reminder: SH1 Brynderwyn Hills planned April closure

|

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists that SH1 Brynderwyn Hills will close in both directions for approximately two weeks from 11:59pm this Sunday 16 April.

During the closure, major earthworks and drainage installation will take place before the road can be fully reopened in May.

Detours will be in place for light vehicles via Mangawhai and Waipu (using Nova Scotia Drive) and for heavy vehicles via SH12 and SH14.

Multiple crews will be working every day of the closure on earthworks, drainage works and abseiling to work below the retaining walls. Under the main slip, overnight crews will be carrying out soil nailing to reinforce the slopes.

To remove material from the largest slip, soil will be pushed from the top by a digger onto the road and then loaded on to trucks.

The work requires full use of both lanes with 18 trucks and 9 large machines working to clear the rest of the slip debris in order for the road to safely reopen next month.

All works are weather dependant as this will be too dangerous to complete when wet. A confirmed date for the reopening will be provided in due course.

Waka Kotahi acknowledges this route is a crucial connection to and from Northland for people and freight, so getting it fully reopened is a priority.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we carry out this essential work in order for the road to re-open permanently.
